Lisa, the Health Nut

I'm lisa and I loooove healthy food!  The lifestyle I chose to live is eating only natural or organic food products, minimally processed whenever possible.  What I can't stand is that people may  automatically assume all "health food" that I eat isn't flavorful or tasty.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!  Why would I eat stuff that doesn't taste good?  So my mission is to spread the word that "healthy" does not mean "tasteless".  Healthy food can be just as yummy as the not-so healthy types!   I'll let you know what foods are good, and which ones aren't so good. :)

Funky Monkey Freeze Dried Fruit

Friday, May 14, 2010 10:06:59 AM

I’m feeling fruity these weeks, obviously! (it’s the good weather, I swear,  it makes me craves fruit!)

So what better time then now to do a review of Funky Monkey Freeze Dried Fruit! This company has a line of all natural freeze dried fruit snacks which provide THREE servings of fruit per 1 oz bag! Here’s some info about the company which Jennifer at Funky Monkey Snacks provided me with.
“•          Funky Monkey Snacks have no added colors, flavors, sugars, or preservatives
•          Our special, proprietary manufacturing process provides for a crunchier texture vs. conventional freeze-drying techniques
•          We use full slices and pieces (not dices) of delicious, fresh fruit
•          Funky Monkey is made in Brazil using tropical fruits at the peak of freshness
•          Our products are gluten-free and are certified Kosher
•          One of our 7 flavors, Purple Funk, also includes açai, a berry from the Amazon that is viewed as the newest superfood
•          Bananamon, JiveALime, and Purple Funk are 100% organic! Pink Pineapple is 95% organic, Carnaval Mix is 70% organic. ”

Nice facts! Who knew these fruits came all the way from BRAZIL!?

I was super excited when I got my package in the mail from Funky Monkey, as I knew these were going to be unique and delicious. The flavors come in Applemon, Bananamon, Carnaval Mix, JiveALime, MangOJ, Pink Pineapple, and Purple Funk.

I decided to try Bananamon, MangOJ, Pink Pineapple, and Carnaval Mix.

Bananamon- this flavor is bananas with cinnamon. I like how they were actual round slices of banana, not just wimpy little pieces. They were airy and crunchy, and COATED with cinnamon! The banana pieces were also sweet and delicious. A perfect snack by itself, or I had them paired with a peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk (ahh, heaven).

MangOJ- this flavor is freezedried mango with orange juice. All I can say is woah! This one is definitely sweet and tangy, and keeps you wanting more! The orange juice was a perfect compliment to the mango. However the pieces did get stuck in my teeth pretty easy (the annoying part of freeze-dried fruit), but I ignored that for the totally awesome taste. Who knew they could make mango crunchy ?

Pine Pineapple- this one is freeze dried pineapple and guava. GUAVA! I have never eaten guava before until today- and it was certainly yummy! Mellow, yet sweet, it went nice with the  TANGY pineapple. The pineapple tasted just as if it was fresh, and really left an impression on my tongue. Good combination, yet again!

Carnaval Mix- this one is banana, pineapple, papaya and apple. I liked this one as well, and I really enjoyed each piece. The banana (my favorite) was airy and sweet, the pineapple tangy, the apple sweet and crispy, and the papaya was flavorful. This one really did remind me of being in a carnival- a little bit of everything!

Overall, I give these 5 stars :)  They are certainly tasty, provide THREE servings of fruit per 1 oz bag, provide fiber, and are a great alternative to some other crispy/crunchy snacks you may crave (think greasy chips!). They are also preservative free, made with organic ingredients and have no added sugars. Definitely my new favorite freeze dried crunchy fruit snack (Bananamon was my favorite of the 4!)
