Lisa, the Health Nut

I'm lisa and I loooove healthy food!  The lifestyle I chose to live is eating only natural or organic food products, minimally processed whenever possible.  What I can't stand is that people may  automatically assume all "health food" that I eat isn't flavorful or tasty.  THIS IS NOT TRUE!  Why would I eat stuff that doesn't taste good?  So my mission is to spread the word that "healthy" does not mean "tasteless".  Healthy food can be just as yummy as the not-so healthy types!   I'll let you know what foods are good, and which ones aren't so good. :)

Vosges Haut-Chocolat Organic Chocolate Bars

What’s better than chocolate? Well, in my opinion, few things are better or hit the spot than chocolate. But how about Organic Chocolate? That’s all I could think of!

I was sent some quite interesting and intriguing chocolate to try from Vosges Haut-Chocolat, and they  actually have quite a story.  I read the back of the bar of chocolates and found out the company was founded by Katrina. An excerpt on the back of the bars says that “Katrina founded Vosges Haut- Chocolat with the concept of Travel the World through Chocolate in a mission to create a sustainable luxury chocolate experience; to bring about awareness of indigenous cultures through the exploration of spices, herbs, roots, flowers, fruits nuts and the obscure”. Isn’t that cool? :)

Of the yummy chocolate bars I was sent to try, I decided to review the Organic Dominicia Noir, Organic Enchanted Mushroom, and Organic Peanut Butter Bonbon.

Organic Dominica Noir- this one was dark chocolate, with 74% cacao. The smell was a very strong and deep dark chocolate. It was creamy to the touch, and almost melted in your hand. It definietely had a “tang” to it that dark chocolate often has as well, and was very rich. If you like dark chocolate, I really think you will like this bar! I shared this with my mom, who I believe said that it had an almost fruity taste to it, and I agreed. 3 1/2 stars

Organic Enchanted Mushroom- this one was dark chocolate (65% cacao), with walnuts and reishi mushrooms. I’ll admit- before trying this I was thinking…mushrooms? In CHOCOLATE? But honestly, do not be offput by the name mushroom! It really does not add any taste at all, and according to the chocolate bar package, the “Reishi mushroom has played a role in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years”, and “Reishi mushrooms are believed to have a number of analgesic, anti-inflammatory antioxidant and anti-viral properties promoting overall health when consumed”. (I think I’m going to have some of this chocolate with my medicine the next time I’m sick! ) The taste was also rich like the first bar, and a very deep dark chocolate. It wasn’t as creamy, and had little bumps throughout the bar, which I would assume to be the walnuts. I did however, enjoy this one a bit more. 4 stars

Organic Peanut Butter Bonbon- do I really need to say more? Organic + peanut butter + chocolate = yum!!! This one is a milk chocolate (45% cacao) with pink Himalayan salt, Maldon sea salt, and peanut butter. This one is really really good. I loved the sea salt crystals on the actual outside of the chocolate- there weren’t a ton, but just enough to create a contrast between sweet and savory. It really brought out the sweeter parts of the milk chocolate and the richness of the peanut butter. I do wish there was a tad more peanut butter on the inside, sort of like a peanut butter cup, but it was still good. Oh, I could totally eat this whole bar in one sitting, if it weren’t for the 18 grams of fat per 4 squares :D   My favorite of the 3, this one gets 4 1/2 stars.

Overall, I enjoyed these chocolates. I love that each bar has a little something special to offer, and there is even a “guide” on the back of the chocolate bars instructing you how to “enjoy an exotic candy bar”! It adds such a nice clean and pure feel and experience to the chocolate bar, and really lets you enjoy it, rather than just eating a chocolate bar like a sandwich or whatever. If you are a fan of chocolate, these are reccommended!!
